Graphic Design
A planner can have the an exemplary researched proposal that goes nowhere because the presentation falls short of stakeholder expectations. The Urban Planning & Policy Department at UIC understood this well, and I was taught a variety of design programs to help illustrate my projects, as seen below.
Humboldt Park Booklet
Bus Station Map
This is a full-page map created as part of a 2019 group exercise to make a booklet promote better public transit in Humboldt Park, Chicago, Illinois. The idea is that the neighborhood should improve their bus shelters and add more shelters along pre-existing bus routes. The icons for the bus shelters were modified in Photoshop. A Google Maps image was used for the base. The map was put together in Adobe Illustrator.
The original background was bland, so I went in and traced the minor streets in grey. It took a bit of time, but the overall effect was cleaner even if it was subtle.
Humboldt Park Bus Shelter
This bus shelter was modified from an existing Sketchup design to include walls for more protection from the elements and better access for those with strollers or wheelchairs. The curb was also designed to be further from the road for accessibility. Edits were made in Photoshop to remove background elements.
Infill Apartments
Below is an apartment complex design for an infill area of Chicago. I first drew the site plan and building design with paper and pencil before moving to Sketchup. The apartments, roads, and parking lot were created from scratch. The playground and community garden are imported community designs.
